ECB Releases Progress on Gender Targets

ECB report on number of women in management positions in the EU banking sector

European Central Bank statistics on its progress in increasing the share of women in management positions. Results show that as of the end of 2017, 27% of management positions were held by women compared with an interim target of 29%. Outcomes of these results are: i) ECB will step up efforts to increase gender diversity; and ii) ECB will work to double the share of women in management from 2013 to 2019.

Women, Business and the Law 2018

WB discussion paper presents laws, regulations and policies that constrain women's economic choices

World Bank discussion paper demonstrates how government policies limit women's full economic participation through laws that restrict their ability to engage in entrepreneurial and employment activities. Key findings: i) in the past two years, there were 87 changes toward legal gender equality across 65 economies; ii) in 104 economies, women face gender-based job restrictions; 45 of economies covered have no laws specifically protecting women from domestic violence; iv) in 18 economies, husbands can legally prevent their wives from working; v) lower legal gender equality is associated with fewer girls attending secondary school relative to boys, fewer women working or running businesses and a wider gender wage gap; and vi) over the past two years, 65 economies carried out 87 reforms increasing women's economic opportunities.

Microfinance Gateway report on increasing women's access to mobile financial services

Microfinance Gateway report discusses the methodologies and outcomes of a project to increase women's access to financial services in Pakistan by improving the user experience and user interface design of mobile money smartphone apps. Research found that: i) there is lower technology literacy among female customers; ii) women needed more interaction with mobile money services than men before feeling confident enough to use the service independently; and iii) female customers had different reasons and goals for adopting mobile money.
