Digital Savings: The Key to Women's Financial Inclusion?

WWB research study examines digital savings for women and emerging best practices

Women's World Banking research study examines ways to address barriers by offering accessibility, convenience, privacy and security through new channels such as mobile phones and retail agents. Presents five best practices in digital financial services: i) allow women to more easily meet requirements for accessing financial services; ii) bundle savings with digital financial services beyond payments and transfers to ensure women's lifecycle needs are fully met; iii) overcome distance and mobility constraints by bringing financial services to women; iv) bridge emotional distance; and v) build trust, confidence and a positive user experience to help women adopt new services more quickly.

Citi GPS report argues that the potential for increases in productivity for women is probably still large in many countries for the following reasons: i) the scope and quality of policies to boost women's ability to participate in the formal economy vary widely across countries; and ii) differences in policy are often quite closely related to differences in outcomes, including labour force particpation, wage differentials between women and women, educational achievement, and the share of women in top jobs.

Promoting Women's Economic Empowerment: What Works?

WB report discusses effectiveness of actions that have direct, near-term impacts on women's economic outcomes

World Bank review of interventions intended to empower women economically. Interventions will have different outcomes depending on the client. Differentiates between needs of very poor and less poor women, and young and adult women. Many constraints facing women can be overcome by simple, inexpensive adjustments in program design that lessen family and social pressures, including providing capital in-kind or transacted through a mobile phone, and providing secure savings accounts to nudge women to keep money in the business rather than to divert it to non-business uses.

World Survey on the Role of Women in Development 2014

UN Women report on gender equality and sustainable development

United Nations Women 2014 report focuses on gender equality and sustainable development. Discusses green economy and care work, food security, population dynamics, and investments for gender-responsive sustainable development. Uses three criteria to assess whether policy actions and investments for sustainable development adequately address gender equality: i) whether they support women's capabilities and their enjoyment of rights; ii) whether they reduce, rather than increase, women's unpaid care work; and iii) whether they embrace women's equal and meaningful participation as actors, leaders and decision-makers.
