Consultative Group to Assist the Poor review of current practice in a range of countries suggests six key steps to be taken at the level of regulation and policy: i) enable microfinance providers (MFPs) to operate safely; ii) provide relief to microfinance clients; iii) make additional liquidity available to MPFs; iv) defer noncritical supervisory processes; v) restructure or liquidate troubled MFPs; and vi) think ahead to the challenges of the recovery, balancing urgent rescue against longer-term values such as legal certainty, risk-based regulation, and sustainability.
